Maine Cannabis laws

Maine is one of the more permissive states when it comes to marijuana. In 2016, Maine voters elected to add Maine to the short list of states permitting the recreational use of marijuana.

Adults age 21 and over may possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana and may possess marijuana paraphernalia. Recreational users may consume cannabis only in a private residence or on private property but never in public places. Use of marijuana in a public place may result in a civil fine of up to $100 under Maine state law. Driving under the influence of marijuana is against the law, similar to driving under the influence of alcohol. Don’t cross state lines or international boundaries.  It’s illegal to leave Maine with any marijuana products – medical or non-medical. Mailing marijuana from Maine is also illegal.

The recreational use law allows adults age 21 or older to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana for recreational use. The law prohibits providing marijuana to anyone under the age of 21 or using in public or while in a vehicle that is in operation.
